Andrew Leung, Choirmaster Emeritus & Founder

Composer/Baritone/Organist

 

Andrew Leung is a passionate choir director, singer and organist who strives to show the beauty of music to people. Through his studies with Professor Aurelio Porfiri, former organist at the basilicas St. Peter Basilica and St. Mary Major in Rome, Mr. Leung deepened his love and appreciation of the Liturgy and its music. Mr. Leung is the founder of Schola Cantorum Sanctorum Angelorum, a traditional men’s schola of singers from Franciscan University of Steubenville. Recently, Mr. Leung directed performances of the schola in Huntington, WV, Weirton, WV, Wintersville, OH and downtown Steubenville and performed repertoire ranging from Gregorian Chant to Hassler’s Cantate Domino, to Biebl’s Ave Maria.

 

 

A singer from Hong Kong, Andrew Leung served as a Cantor at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Wintersville, OH, St. Benedict Church in Hong Kong and the Latin Mass Community in Hong Kong. Mr. Leung earned his undergraduate degree in Sacred Music with a concentration in Vocal Performance from Franciscan University of Steubenville where he studied with Dr. Jessica Ewell. As a chorister, Mr. Leung was a member and section leader of the Franciscan University Chorale, University Good Friday Choir, St. Cecilia Choir in Hong Kong and Schola Cantorum Franciscana, which he performed the Baritone solo from Vivaldi’s Magnificat.

 

As a keyboard artist, Mr. Leung started his piano studies at the age of five and he earned the Grade 8 certificate from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in 2010. He served as the accompanist for the University Good Friday Choir and the Franciscan University Chamber Orchestra. Mr. Leung started his organ studies in 2010 with Dr. Paul Weber, and with Professor Nicholas Will later. Mr. Leung served as organist at Franciscan University’s Christ the King Chapel, St. Benedict Church in Hong Kong and St. Peter’s Church in Steubenville.

 

His love for the keyboard led him to study piano tuning and its structure in 2012. As a Catholic Church musician, Mr. Leung has a great passion and appreciation for the Sacred Liturgy. He has been serving as Master of Ceremonies and Sacristan for different churches in the past seven years. He was the Master of Ceremonies, Head of Altar Servers, for Christ the King Chapel at Franciscan University. His love for the Liturgy moved him to found the Students for Catholic Liturgy on the Franciscan University Campus in 2013. Under his leadership as the Vice-president, the student organization developed quickly and has sponsored numerous talks and a conference on campus promoting beautiful Liturgies.
